The Intelligent Monitoring Lab was established in 2012 on the basis of the Laboratory of Modeling Thermomechanical Processes in Deformable Bodies. Till 2023 the Laboratory was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences I.N. Shardakov; in 2024, a youth laboratory of the same name (chaired by G.N. Gusev, PhD) was created on its basis.

The main research direction of the youth laboratory is the development and testing of intelligent monitoring systems for continuous monitoring of the deformation behavior of buildings and engineering structures. Analysis of in-situ measurement data enables verifying the models developed in the Laboratory and predicting the influence of natural and man-made factors on the mechanical condition of structures.

An experimental stand for testing large-scale building structures and their components under quasi-static and dynamic loading was created. The stand is used to study subcritical and critical deformation of complex and engineering structures and to test monitoring systems. Over 50 monitoring systems were designed in the Laboratory for facilities in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. Many of these systems operate in a continuous regime, which ensures long-term safety and operational reliability of structures.

In recent decades, climate change causes permafrost (the cryolithozone) to thaw, which significantly alters the mechanical properties of foundations for buildings and engineering structures in the Arctic zone. One primary research area of the Laboratory includes the development, adaptation and testing of intelligent monitoring systems for continuous and reliable monitoring of the deformation behavior of buildings and engineering structures in the Northern regions of Russia.
