The primary scientific direction of the Laboratory includes research that provides scientific justification for optimal and safe approaches to long-term underground carbon-dioxide disposals in geological systems. The subsoil of the Perm Krai offers a multifunctional carbon sequestration site by storing large amount of carbon in oil reservoirs, coal seams of abandoned mines in the Kizelovsky Basin and in the thick salt layers of the Verkhnekamskoye deposit, which are feasible to construct specialized storage facilities.

In 2021, the Lab participated in the work of the scientific support group of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education Program focused on adapting the Russian economy to the global energy transition. At present, it collaborates with the University of Science and Technology MISIS. Early stages of the development of the magnetic flux leakage method were carried out jointly with research centers of the Weatherford Company, a global leader in geological exploration developing related scientific and technical solutions.

The lab team broad scientific interests are driven by the need to solve fundamental problems facing the main scientific direction. The most significant research activities are concentrated on developing new mathematical theories for random and kinetic processes in inhomogeneous media with multiple characteristic phase transition scales. The research breakthroughs of the Laboratory can be evaluated through publications in the Nature Index journals, Chemical Engineering Journal and Physical Review Letters.

The Laboratory conducts joint research with leading scientists in statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory: Yoshiki Kuramoto, Bard Ermentrout, Arkady Pikovsky, Antonio Politi, and Alexandr Nepomnyashciy. The achievements of the Laboratory have been recognized by a mathematician Steven Strogatz and a theoretical physicist Edward Ott..
