The Laboratory was established in 1981 at the initiative of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Prof. A.A.Rogovoy. Research interests of the Lab concentrated on finding solutions to the problems of elastic and inelastic deformation of solids at finite deformation. Developing this area required flexible and correct approaches able to describe the deformation of materials exhibiting different rheological behaviors: elastic, thermoplastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic. This question remains at the forefront of solid mechanics even now.

The Laboratory team provided a theoretical justification for the increase in shear modulus and in bulk elastic modulus observed in a variety of hydrostatic pressure tests at large deformation. A formalized theory for formulating constitutive equations for complex thermo- elastic –inelastic media with structural changes at finite deformation was developed. Analysis of the rotary drawing process of tube billets was performed, and the capabilities of rubber membranes were investigated in pressure tests.

To date the Lab activities include developing models to study the interactions between polymers, the process of high-temperature oxide-sulfide corrosion of heat-resistant alloys under thermomechanical loading, the behavior of shape-memory materials that respond to deformation and electromagnetic fields, the accumulation of fatigue microdamage under irregular impacts, as well as the processes of plastic failure and residual stress development.

The Laboratory collaborates with many companies and scientific institutions, such as Perm Scientific and Production Instrument-Making Company, UEC-Aviadvigatel, Alfatekh Ltd, Lysva Plant of Enamelware Cookware JSC, V.A. Bely Institute of Mechanics of Metal-Polymer Systems (Republic of Belarus), Novomet-Perm Ltd, and Perm National Research Polytechnic University. The Lab team accomplished problem-solving for the Research Institute of Rubber Coatings and Products (St. Petersburg), S.M. Kirov Scientific Production Association (Perm), Perm Chemical Equipment Plant, and Perm Research Technological Institute.
